Call for Candidates: Doctoral Program in Environment and Society at LMU Munich, Germany

The Doctoral Program in Environment and Society invites applications from graduates in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences who wish to research the complex relationships between environment and society within an interdisciplinary setting. Our program is based at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, a joint initiative of LMU Munich and the Deutsches Museum. The Rachel Carson Center is an international center for research and education in the environmental humanities and social sciences: its mission is to advance research and discussion concerning the interrelationship between humans and nature.

The Rachel Carson Center and its partner institutions ensure that all doctoral students have access to a lively research community of international and interdisciplinary scholars. All doctoral students have a permanent workspace at the RCC or the Deutsches Museum, a program of regular colloquia, workshops, and talks by visiting academics; excellent supervision by members of the academic board; and a sociable and diverse peer group. 

The program does not offer scholarships for doctoral candidates, but can assist students who apply for external funding: limited funding is available for conference travel and archival or field research. Applicants wishing to be admitted to this doctoral program must hold a Master’s degree from a recognized university, show evidence of excellence in their field of study, and present a plan for a doctoral project in one of the following areas or combination of areas:

• Environmental History, History of Science and Technology, Transatlantic History
• Art History
• Environmental Sociology, Political Economy, Sociology of Economics
• Energy and Resource Economics for Sustainability
• Geography: Modeling Social-Ecological Relations and Systems, Political Ecology
• Biology: Paleoanatomy and Archaeology
• Environmental Law
• Comparative or International Policy, Politics of Ecological Transitions
• Environmental Ethics
• Anthropology: Environmental, Urban, or Political; especially Latin America and Pacific

Please submit your application by 15 November 2016 via the online portal of the LMU Munich Graduate Center: https://portal.graduatecenter-lmu.de/ocgc/proenviron 

Only applications submitted through the portal will be considered. Successful candidates will be notified by January 2017 to join the program for the summer semester 2017. You will need the following documents for your online application:

• Certification of university degree(s) held;
• Proof of higher education entrance qualification (high school diploma or equivalent);
• Master’s thesis (if in a language other than English or German, please provide a table of contents and an exposé of max. 5 pages in English or German);
• An academic curriculum vitae (including publications, if applicable);
• A statement of purpose for your application to the program (no more than 2 pages);
• A research proposal (max. five pages, including bibliography, footnotes, and timetable);
• The name of a member of the Academic Board whose research interests best match the dissertation project;
• Name and contact information for two referees (university lecturers), able to give information about your suitability for the program and your academic potential.
