RA position with the Environment & Society Portal (Munich)

The Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (RCC) seeks a Research Associate for the Environment & Society Portal (www.environmentandsociety.org), a digital gateway to resources on the human-environment relationship. The Portal is the RCC’s open access publication platform and archive. It receives around 10,000 unique visits each month from around the world.

The Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society is a joint initiative of LMU Munich and the Deutsches Museum. Generously supported by the German Ministry for Research and Education, its goal is to further research and discussion in the field of international environmental studies and to strengthen the role of the humanities in political and scientific debates about the environment.

This is a part-time (19h/week) position suitable for Ph.D. candidates. The position starts in July 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Responsibilities include:

  • Project management for various Environment & Society Portal collections and features
  • Research, fact-check, edit, and format texts, images, and metadata
  • Prepare materials for publication within the Portal’s content management system (Drupal)
  • Correspond with contributors and partners to guide projects to completion

Qualifications:

  • Academic foundation in environmental history or a related field; Ph.D. candidacy preferred
  • Excellent (native or near-native) English skills; German and other languages a plus
  • Strong general computer skills; HTML, Drupal, and social media experience a plus
  • Familiarity with digital humanities, e-publishing, open access and licensing issues
  • Ability to work within a team, organize, prioritize, and deliver quality results on deadline.

This 19 hour/week appointment will be made initially for 6 months with the possibility of renewal. Salary will be determined according to LMU compensation for “wissenschaftliche Hilfskräfte” (TV-L 12). The RCC is located in central Munich and offers a culturally diverse and flexible working environment. The working language of the Center is English.
